Environmental Product Declaration

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a form of ecolabel, which is essentially a product-specific environmental score card. Classified as a type 3 ecolabel, it's a robust way of summarising the environmental impacts associated with a product over its entire lifecycle.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

More and more architects and designers want objective data to help inform decisions on choices of building materials, elements and assemblies, and manufacturers want their products to be fairly represented on a level playing field. An EPD is the first step in developing a lifecycle assessment (LCA) and offers a reliable and standardised way to convey the results of an LCA, allowing comparisons between products serving the same purpose. EPD data is required by ISO14025 Ecolabels.

The Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) is running an LCA Tools project, and SSC sits on the advisory group. The project aims to develop an LCA plan for consideration by the NZ building sector, which includes EPDs.
