By joining SSC you can enjoy the benefits of belonging to an organisation dedicated to the advancement of steel as the sustainable construction material of choice.

Recycling

Recycling contributes to more sustainable development by diverting materials from the waste stream and by substituting primary resources.

Recycling Steel

Steel can be recycled infinitely and never lose its qualities as a construction material. This unique characteristic makes steel invaluable at all stages of its lifecycle. This is in stark contrast to other materials which are either downcycled or, from problems with contamination in the waste stream, restrict opportunities to divert waste for reuse and recycling.

Worldwide, it is estimated that 90% of steel from demolition sites goes back to the steel mills for recycling – over 475 million tonnes of steel was recycled in 2008.

The positive environmental impact of recycling steel is significant: at least 60% less energy is required to produce steel from scrap than it does from iron ore, and the issue of waste disposal is diminished because of used steel’s endless recyclability.
