International Stainless Steel Forum

International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF)

The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), founded in 1996, is a non-profit research organisation, which serves as the world forum on various aspects of the international stainless steel industry. Its vision is to provide sustainable solutions for everyday life.

ISSF members, comprising producers of stainless steel and stainless steel industry associations, are located in 27 countries, including New Zealand. Jointly they produced 75-80% of all stainless steel manufactured in 2009.

The ISSF recognises the importance of lifecycle assessment (LCA) to provide an accurate profile of stainless steel's environmental credentials. The organisation carried out a lifecycle inventory (LCI) analysis to quantify resource use, energy and environmental emissions associated with the processing of eight stainless steel products, from the extraction of raw materials to the factory gate. The study focused on major stainless steel producers in Europe, Japan, Korea and the USA.

The ISSF aims to improve the quality of the data quality over time, including further updates on data, expanding the range of reliable data categories and developing factual end-of-life recycling ratios for stainless steel products.
